Adi Guru Da Jayanthi

This chant was composed using the Ragaam Brindavani, a pentatonic (five-note) scale. One of its distinctive features is that the scale changes between ascending and descending motion, giving the melody its unique character and subtle emotional colour.

Relative to a Western major (Ionian) scale, the scale degrees are:

Ascending degrees:
I – ♭II – IV – V – VII – VIII

Descending degrees:
VIII – ♭VII – V – IV – ♭II – I

In C, the Ragaam Brindavani would be:

Ascending: C – D♭ – F – G – B – C
Descending: C – B♭ – G – F – D♭ – C
